Interview with LaToia Cash, Remote Operations Coordinator, FedChoice FCU: “Live Truthfully and Always Do What Makes You Happy”
Please tell us a little more about yourself.
I am originally from Detroit, Michigan, and the youngest of four children. I relocated to Washington, D.C. in 2006 and attended Howard University. While working here, I met my husband, got married, and had three beautiful daughters ages seven, six and one year old.
How long have you been with FedChoice?
I like to say that I grew up while at FedChoice! I started in the financial industry at PNC Bank, and eventually joined FedChoice in 2014 — ten years ago! My first job was as a Financial Service Advisor (FSA), with my goal set on becoming a branch manager. Two years into my employment, I was promoted to Lanham FSC Assistant Manager and moved on to become the Brentwood FSC Manager shortly after. Moving back to the Lanham branch as Branch Manager months before the 2020 pandemic, I managed my staff of 12 plus co-managed the remaining FSAs from all other branches. After integrating our ATMs to our current vendor, Dolphin, I transitioned to my current role – Remote Operations Coordinator.
What guides you at FedChoice?
The secret is simple – always remain open to change, be open to learning, and continuously cultivate relationships outside of your department. The credit union staff members have a wealth of knowledge and experience, and it helps to get to know others.
Who were your mentors?
Starting out, my branch manager was my initial mentor. She helped mold and prepare me for management. My current mentor/manager, Deneen Stone, FedChoice Retail Services Manager, was initially my subordinate. We quickly grew close and learned that we have a lot of the same aspirations. Sandra Park, FedChoice Chief People’s and Strategy Officer, was also my mentor when I became the Brentwood FSC Manager.
How is working for a credit union different from any other work?
Working for FedChoice provides a very fun and engaging experience. At previous employers, I felt like just a number, not a person, not someone that the executive team actually knows and cares about.
What is the most enjoyable part of working at FedChoice?
Being a part of the various ways we can assist our members with their short- and long-term goals, as well as being there in their time of need.
Why is community engagement important to you?
Community engagement is necessary for our community to know who we are, and what we can provide to them.
What is your life’s motto and why? What do you like to do in your free time?
Live truthfully, and always do what makes you happy.
I am a mother to three young children, and I am all about family. In my free time, I enjoy time with them. Doing their hair, playing board games, Nintendo switch with the girls and my husband, and over the summer enjoying all our weekend time at the pool and park.
Do you have a special message for our members?
Thank you for always making us your premier financial institution!
